If you require a dental crown or bridge, it can often take two weeks to receive the customized product. In the meantime, you’ll likely have to wear a temporary crown and stick to a strict diet while you wait.
Thanks to the advancement in dental technology, our dentists at Century Stone can offer patients the ability to wait only an hour while we prepare their customized crown or bridge for them! It’s that simple!
There are many benefits of choosing same-day restorations at Century Stone’s dental office in Hamilton.

ToggleDental Crown Advantages
If you have badly damaged, misshapen, or cracked teeth, there are many reasons why you should consider speaking about dental crowns with your dentist. Crowns, also commonly referred to as “caps”, are often made from porcelain – a very durable and natural-looking material that’s been used in dentistry since the 1880s.
They can last upwards of 15 years or more following the proper oral hygiene of course and fit over your existing teeth after they’ve been prepared. In order to prepare your teeth, the enamel has to be filed down in order for the cap to fit.
Essentially, crowns can repair the function of your teeth and improve the appearance which is why they’re often used for repairing a tooth after a root canal.
Dental Bridge Advantages
Bridges are precisely what they sound like, only they’re a bridge made from false teeth. If you have one or more missing teeth, than a dental bridge may be a better option for you seeing as they replace gaps.
Leaving gaps can lead to a weakened jawbone or cause other teeth to shift into its place, so by getting a customized bridge, the gaps can be filled while the bridges are affixed to your surrounding natural teeth or dental implants.
Typically, bridges are also made from porcelain with a combination of metal alloys that help attach the teeth together and just like crowns, they look and feel exactly like natural teeth. Your bite and jawbone will be stronger and the appearance of your smile will drastically improve.
How Dental Crowns & Bridges Are Made
After discussing the best material with your dentist for your crown or bridge, we use a CEREC Omnicam to scan your tooth to determine the exact colour your new replacement tooth should be. This saves time and allows us to ensure great accuracy.
Once the scan is complete, we use a CEREC milling and grinding machine that accurately mills the tooth and afterwards, it can be placed in the CEREC firing machine to finish it off. And guess what? That’s it. You have your new placement tooth all within an hour’s visit.
Using The Dental Technology
In order to improve our patient experience even more, we love to use our dental technology. We’re proud to have CEREC technology in our office because it not only allows for same-day crowns and bridge restorations but it also improves patient comfort and that means a lot to us.
More benefits to using this technology include:
- Great accuracy compared to traditional moulds
- Only one appointment needed
- No need for temporary crowns and diet restrictions since your new crown and bridge will be ready in an hour
- Less time away from school or work since it’s same-day restorations
- More comfortable since there’s less need for injections, temporary crowns, or impression putty
- Helps to preserve your smile and jawbone strength
- Safe and durable materials
Dental Crown & Bridge Aftercare
Just because you have replacement teeth, doesn’t mean you’re free from cavities or being diagnosed with gum/periodontal disease. You should still be maintaining a thorough oral hygiene regime such as brushing your teeth twice daily, preferably once in the morning after breakfast and once in the evening after dinner or before bedtime.
Flossing should be done once a day, followed by rinsing with mouthwash. Not flossing or removing debris trapped between crowns and bridges can lead to discolouration.
One of the best ways to ensure your crowns and bridges are in mint condition is by scheduling regular dental checkups every six months so we can perform a cleaning routine and remove tartar you can’t remove yourself.
For the first few days after receiving your crown or bridge, you might experience a bit of sensitivity or discomfort. You’ll want to avoid eating harder or chewier foods, but it shouldn’t take long to get back to your regular diet.
If discomfort still continues, contact us immediately so we can determine what’s causing the problem. You should also contact us right away if you’ve experienced trauma to the mouth and your crown has accidentally been knocked out/fractured. The longer it goes untreated, the more you’re exposing the underlying tooth to infection.
Are There Any Disadvantages To Receiving Dental Crowns?
There are definitely reasons why dental crowns may not be for every patient, particularly if they have gum disease and are prone to teeth falling out or experiencing tooth decay. If you have a bad habit of grinding or clenching your teeth while you sleep, porcelain crowns or bridges may also not be for you as they can crack or break.
Other disadvantages may include:
- Discolouration
- Cement holding crown in place may weaken over time
- They’re more expensive (but it should be covered by your insurance company’s benefits)
- There may be sensitivity to hot or cold foods/drinks
- They’re permanent since the enamel of your teeth will be filed down
